How to learn Tatar from scratch on your own
By Chamala ·
Start with a short conversation: say hello, give your name and ask for the other person’s. Then look at the letters in those phrases and repeat them the next day. For the first lessons a phone, a few examples with audio and time to answer on your own — aloud or in writing — are enough.
This plan will help you organise your first week of learning Tatar on your own. It is a start, not a promise of fluency in seven days.
What comes first: the alphabet or phrases?
Both, at the same time. Tatar is written in Cyrillic, and its alphabet has 39 letters: the 33 letters of the Russian alphabet plus six of its own — ә, ө, ү, җ, ң, һ. You do not need the whole alphabet before your first conversation: take a word, listen to it and look for the unfamiliar letter in it.
For example, сәлам (“hi”) has an ә, and рәхмәт (“thank you”) has two. Compare the spelling with the sound in the greetings with audio. The letters are covered one by one in the article about the Tatar alphabet.
If Cyrillic is new to you, give it a few evenings of its own: most letters map to one sound, and after a week of short words reading stops being a puzzle.
A plan for the first week
Give each session as much time as you can keep up regularly — for example, 10–15 minutes: first recall yesterday’s material without hints, then work through a new example and finish with an answer of your own.
| Day | Material | Your own task |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Сәлам! — Hi! Минем исемем… — My name is… | Say hello and put in your own name |
| 2 | Синең исемең ничек? — What is your name? | Ask for a name and play both parts |
| 3 | Ә, ө, ү, җ, ң, һ | Find the letters in the alphabet article’s examples and repeat them |
| 4 | Рәхмәт! — Thank you! Сау бул! — Goodbye! | Add thanks and a goodbye to your conversation |
| 5 | Words on one topic | Pick five words in the vocabulary and check you remember them |
| 6 | A short dialogue | Introduce yourself without looking at a ready-made text |
| 7 | Review | Hide the translations, recall the phrases, mark what was hard |
Choose words that fit your life — from the Tatar vocabulary by topic, not from a random long list.
How to remember words so you can use them
Start with a small set. Read a word, listen to the recording, cover the translation and try to recall the meaning. Then do it the other way round: look at the English and say the Tatar word.
Recognising a word among options and recalling it yourself are different tasks, so alternate them. If a phrase will not come back, look at the example, repeat it and test yourself again later. Next time, start with the hard words.
Learn phrases together with their situation: Минем исемем… is for introducing yourself, Синең исемең ничек? for asking someone’s name. That way everything you learn has a use straight away.
When to add grammar
When a question comes up about a phrase you already know. Compare:
- Минем исемем Алсу. — My name is Alsu.
- Синең исемең ничек? — What is your name? (to a friend)
- Сезнең исемегез ничек? — What is your name? (polite)
Learn these as whole phrases first and work out later how the words change. You do not need the whole system of endings for a first conversation. One thing to keep in mind early on: like French or German, Tatar has a familiar “you” (син) and a polite one (сез) — do not mix them in one sentence.
If you understand Tatar but cannot answer
Many people heard Tatar at home and understand more than they can say. Start from day two of the plan: cover the ready-made dialogue and answer on your own. If a phrase does not come, write down exactly that phrase and play the conversation again with a different name.
For practice, ask someone you know to ask you simple questions, or talk to an AI partner. Check the AI’s answers against learning materials: it can make mistakes too.

FAQ
Can I start without a teacher?
Your first phrases and reading can be practised on your own with examples that have translations and audio. For detailed feedback on pronunciation and for explaining the tricky parts, a teacher or a native speaker helps.
Should I write Tatar words in Latin letters?
In your notes, keep the Tatar spelling with ә, ө, ү, җ, ң, һ. A rough Latin transcription does not show all the differences between sounds, and you will need to read Cyrillic anyway. Add a Tatar keyboard or copy the letters from the examples.
How do I know the first week worked?
Try, without hints, to say hello, give your name, ask for the other person’s and say goodbye. If that works, move on to the next everyday situation. If not, repeat the specific phrases that do not come back yet.
