Tatar for kids: how to start at home

By Chamala ·

Five minutes a day and the words your child hears all the time are enough to start: әни — “mum”, әти — “dad”, мәче — “cat”, алма — “apple”. You do not need to speak Tatar fluently yourself. Listen to the words with audio together and name the things around you in Tatar. Press ▶ to hear a word.

For families who live far from Tatarstan, this is often the main way a child meets the language: a few words at home, a grandparent on a video call, a lullaby at bedtime.

First words: the family

The most useful words are the ones you can say many times a day.

TatarEnglish
әниmom
әтиdad
әбиgrandmother
бабайgrandfather

Әби is “grandma” and бабай is “grandpa”. A word is easier to remember when it belongs to a real person: ask grandma to answer to “әби”, and the word will stick by itself.

Animals, colours and numbers

Next come topics that are easy to show with a picture or a toy.

TatarEnglish
этdog
мәчеcat
кошbird
атhorse
сыерcow
TatarEnglish
кызылred
акwhite
яшелgreen
зәңгәрblue
TatarEnglish
берone
икеtwo
өчthree

Colours are easy to practise on a walk: кызыл машина — a red car, яшел агач — a green tree. As in English, the adjective comes before the noun, and it never changes. Numbers stick when you count out loud: stairs, spoons, toys.

More words with audio are in the vocabulary by topic, for example animals and body parts.

The letters

Tatar is written in Cyrillic, with 39 letters: the 33 of the Russian alphabet plus six of its own — ә, ө, ү, җ, ң, һ. If your child already reads Russian, start with these six. If not, there is no rush: at first, listening and speaking matter more than reading. Each special letter is easy to show in a familiar word: ә in әни, ө in өч (“three”).

How to pronounce them, and why Tatar words have “back” and “front” endings, is explained in the article about the Tatar alphabet.

How to keep it fun

If you do not speak Tatar yourself

Learn together. A parent who knows 20 more words than the child already has something to show. Use the audio: it gives the right pronunciation where the spelling alone is not enough. Invite grandparents who speak Tatar — even a weekly video call in Tatar gives the child a reason to use the language, and gives grandparents a reason to call more often.

FAQ

At what age can we start?

Listening to Tatar speech, songs and lullabies is fine from birth. Word and picture games suit toddlers who already point at and name things, and the letters suit children who are starting to learn to read.

Will my child mix up Tatar and English (or Russian)?

Children growing up with two or three languages may mix words at first. That is normal and passes. It helps when each language has a clear place — for example, Tatar is for talking to grandma or for the evening game.

How many words before we see results?

Start with 10–15 words your child hears every day. Once they recognise them by ear and say them on their own, add the next topic.
